I have heard several people say things like “People don’t change,” or “Once a cheater, always a cheater.”
I have to say I disagree with that.
Let’s break this down into simple, natural terms:
Are you the same as you were when you were an infant?
Do you only have the same knowledge and educational level that you had in elementary school?
Of course not, because you learned more as you got older.
Do you have the same job you had when you first got out of school?
As we can see already, people do change. We change and grow naturally as humans. We grow mentally. We should also grow spiritually.
Jesus was sent to die on the cross, so when we accept Him, our sins are washed away.
When we accept what He did for us and believe in Him, our old nature is gone. God has made us new creatures through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). So therefore, as followers of Christ, we have changed.
We may have been cheaters before, but through Jesus’ blood, we are changed and are no longer cheaters. That goes for any sin. We no longer fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16, 19-26).
Now, if someone rejects Jesus Christ, then that person will continue to live in sin. And yes, if they were a cheater before, then they would continue to be that way. And no, they may never change.
