The Meaning of Life

Why are we here? What is the purpose of life?

Because God is Love (1 John 4:8,16), I believe He originally created humans to share that love and show how much He loves. He created the earth and everything in it for our pleasure and enjoyment to show humans how much He loves us. He wanted to demonstrate His love and share His love. He wanted people to know how much He was love.

I think things have changed a little bit because of sin and because of what has happened in the earth. Because of sin, we are supposed to show others how much God loves and how He is love.

In John 13:34-35, Jesus said “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

We show that love by helping people, by praying for them, if they need clothes or food, we give it to them (Proverbs 25:21, Romans 12:20, Matthew 25:35-40, Proverbs 3:27). When we help others, that continues God’s love. He shows His love by us ministering to other people.

Also because of sin, but because God still loves us, we have been called to “go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15), and to “make disciples of all men/nations” (Matthew 28:19). When we do that, we are showing God’s love by letting everyone know that God made a way of salvation from hell. He demonstrates His love for us, by using us to witness to other people.

Since God is love, He is merciful, compassionate, and long suffering. 2 Peter 3:9 tells us that “God is not willing that any should perish.” Since He is love, He gives us every opportunity to call His name. He longs for us to be in His loving arms. He does everything He can to save us.

So, our purpose has changed just a little bit. God is still showering His love upon us. Because He is love, He is using us to show that love by helping other people and by preaching the Gospel or Good News to others.

The purpose and meaning of life is to fellowship with God, so God can show His love to us. But also, our purpose here now, because of sin, is to preach the Gospel (Good News) and make disciples of all men, and show other people that God loves them so much, He sent His Son Jesus to die for them, so we don’t have to go to hell.
